Next Chapter Ventures was scaling rapidly and needed someone who could bring both rigorous investment evaluation and deep operational expertise to support portfolio companies through critical growth phases. As the firm expanded its investment pipeline, the dual challenge was clear: ensure deal quality while simultaneously helping existing portfolio companies navigate operational complexities and improve their unit economics. In my first few months as Partner and Committee Chair, I designed and implemented a comprehensive three-stage diligence framework that we immediately piloted across four active deals in the pipeline. This framework provided the structure and rigor needed to evaluate opportunities more systematically. Simultaneously, I worked hands-on with two portfolio companies to restructure their sales operations, focusing on improving efficiency and reducing customer acquisition costs—achieving a 40% reduction that had immediate impact on their financial performance. The results validated the approach quickly. The new diligence framework enabled us to pass on two deals that would have been poor strategic fits, while leading to three successful investments that aligned with our thesis. Within six months, the portfolio companies I worked with demonstrated improved unit economics, with one CEO specifically noting that the cost reduction extended their runway by 18 months—a critical outcome in a capital-constrained environment. The founding partners recognized the value as well, noting that our diligence process reduced decision time by 30%, allowing the firm to move faster on the right opportunities while avoiding costly mistakes.
