As COO at a small startup serving court reporting, medical records providers and law firms, I faced a critical challenge: our sales team repeatedly heard "we love the product but can't move forward without SOC 2." We were a young company with no dedicated security role, minimal documentation, and an urgent need to build credibility with enterprise customers who required proof of compliance. The lack of SOC 2 and HIPAA certification had become a direct barrier to revenue growth.
I took ownership of the entire compliance initiative, starting with vendor selection—evaluating audit support firms and negotiating our contract. Recognizing that my IT partner (our VP of CS) and I needed better infrastructure to manage the cross-functional effort, I initially implemented Notion to track tasks, but quickly pivoted to Vanta, a purpose-built compliance tool that automated follow-ups and ensured no gap was overlooked. I built our security policies from scratch, ran weekly check-ins with my IT partner and VP of Engineering to triage blockers in real time, and personally oversaw the HR aspects of compliance training and the rollout of new access controls across the team.
The results were immediate and significant. With a collaborative core team of 3 people, over 7 months, we successfully achieved both SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance, which unlocked enterprise deals worth $400K that had been stalled in our pipeline. Beyond closing those deals, security became a competitive advantage—the CaseMarkTrust Center became a core component of our sales pitch for new clients, transforming compliance from a checkbox requirement into a strategic differentiator that established our credibility in a regulated industry.
