When I joined LightForce as the 25th employee, the company was virtually unknown in the orthodontic space. The market was dominated by legacy players like Align Technology, and we had no brand presence, no clear positioning, and limited sales collateral. My biggest challenge was building awareness from scratch in a conservative industry that was notoriously slow to adopt new technology.
I developed a multi-channel strategy focused on education and thought leadership to break through the noise. I launched a webinar series featuring early adopters, invested heavily in trade show presence at major orthodontic conferences, and created compelling case study content that demonstrated clinical outcomes. I also built strategic partnerships with key opinion leaders who could champion the technology to their peers within the orthodontic community.
Execution required creativity and resourcefulness. Working with a tiny budget compared to our competitors, I personally recruited KOLs by attending conferences and building relationships one-on-one. When I faced initial resistance from the sales team who didn't trust marketing-generated leads, I implemented a closed-loop reporting system to prove ROI and build internal credibility.
The results were transformative. We grew from zero to 1,200+ active orthodontic practices within three years. Marketing-qualified leads increased 400% year-over-year, and our close rate on marketing-sourced leads hit 35%. By the time I left, LightForce had raised a Series C and was valued at over $150M, with marketing having played a central role in establishing the company as a credible competitor in a crowded market.
