About six months into building MGMT Boston, I kept hearing the same company come up in conversations around town: Endeca. Its alumni had gone on to found or lead a striking number of Boston's most successful startups, and I felt that story hadn't really been told in full. I decided to make it the subject of one of our first major editorial pieces, betting that a well-researched piece on Boston's startup lineage would help establish MGMT Boston as a serious voice in the local ecosystem.
I spent two to three months on the project, handling the research, scheduling, and interviews myself. I talked to six former Endeca people who covered a wide range of the company's history and functions: John Andrews (Director of Strategic Marketing through VP of Marketing & Product, 2004-2012), Steve Fredette (Software Engineer through Manager of Development, 2005-2012), Andrew Lau (Engineer through VP Engineering, 1999-2008), Vinay Mohta (Software Architect through New Market Development, 2000-2006), Julie Yoo (Software Engineer through Sales Engineer, 2001-2006), and Steve Papa (Co-Founder & CEO, 1999-2011). I pieced their accounts together into a series, published as "The Endeca Effect" on mgmtboston.com.
The piece gave MGMT Boston real credibility early on. It opened doors to cover more of the startups those same Endeca alumni were building next, and it helped build the momentum that carried us through our first year.
